Reducing stress on driving axles
Thursday 19 November 2009
Turntables can be used vertically to reduce stress on driving axle. With this setup, the axle has less friction with its casing, hence improving the overall truck’s performances.
The problem is that a turntable is quite large, almost as large as the 81,6 wheels. In order to keep a good ground clearance, it should be positionned at a high level, making the truck a little more instable.
There exists also blue turntables, from Set #9748 (droid developer kit). They are smaller but also more fragile.

I don’t quite get how it reduces stress on the driving axle. Maybe if you included a picture of the setup you are suggesting (just something basic, doesn’t have to be in a truck) then the article would be a little cleared.

With pendular axles, the swinging axle is the axle through with you transmit power (torque) to the wheels (except if you insert a trick like Zblj did here : http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/zblj/Trial/Trialtruck8/imgp4466.jpg).
If you use a turntable to do the swinging job, your "power" axle (the lego axle) is less stressed, improving the efficiency of your truck. Just take this picture (from Nico71) as an example : http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/nico71/Trial-Truck/Lada-Niva-4x4/Frame/dscf4226.jpg
Hope this helps

It is because the pendular suspention would not be rotating on the driving article!
